The Legislature's Environment Committee has two meetings left to vote on some of the most significant bills on its agenda.
As anticipated, some of the big environmental efforts this year are around climate, waste, wildlife, trees, toxic chemicals, and Environmental Justice. Many of the bills on our Watchlist have already been voted out of the Environment, Energy, and Transportation committees, and are awaiting further action in the House or Senate.
On Wednesday, March 22, members of the Environment Committee will be voting on legislation that could be transformative for our state. We have been working around the clock to help get these bills in the best possible shape before the vote.
The Committee Agenda will not be released until 3:00pm today, but we want to give you a heads up on a few of the bills to watch:
Senate Bill 1145 Climate Accountability - CTLCV testimony supports specific goals in each sector to attain and enforce CT's greenhouse gas emission reduction commitments and supports strengthening amendments to ensure accountability.
Senate Bill 1147 Environmental Justice - CTLCV testimony supports the bill and urges criteria that "shall" trigger denial of a new permit for a polluting facility in an overburdened community.
Senate Bill 1148 Bears - CTLCV testimony opposes bear hunting and supports non-lethal approaches that protect both humans and bears.
House Bill 6664 Waste - CTLCV testimony supports Extended Producer Responsibility but strongly opposes inclusion of Chemical Recycling.
House Resolution 37 Environmental Rights Amendment to the State Constitution - CTLCV testimony supports this critical first step in a long term effort to mandate environmental protections for all.
ALL committee meetings and public hearings at the legislature are recorded and available for later viewing on the CGA Website. Each Committee has its own Youtube Channel. If the heavily used CGA site is slow to respond, check back later.
If any of the bills listed above are not on the Wednesday agenda, they may still be voted on at a final Environment Committee meeting on Friday, March 24.
Much more to come! Stay tuned and thank you for your support.
