Lamont: This Isn't the Environmental Leadership We Had in Mind

As reported on  April 25 in the Westfair Business Journal for Fairfield County , Governor Lamont was cited for illegally cutting down 186 trees, without a permit, and while crossing property lines--all for the sake of improving the view of a pond.  Permit and property line problems notwithstanding, cutting down a couple hundred trees makes it pretty hard to take the Governor seriously as pro-environment leader.  Walking the talk matters. Trees, as many Connecticut residents know, play a critical role in climate action, capturing carbon, cooling the environment, protecting against floods, erosion and more.   Cutting down or burning forests releases the carbon stored in their trees and soil, and prevents them from absorbing more CO2 in the future. Since 1850, about 30% of all CO2 emissions have come from deforestation. Deforestation can also have more local climate impacts. Because trees release moisture that cools the air around them, scientists have found that deforestation has led t

Selling Out Connecticut: Bloomfield's Duncaster to Expand--At the Expense of More Forest and Fields?

Hello, @Bloomfield and environs. You may be about to lose more of the all-important green space that's essential to prevent even more environmental degradation. The Hartford Business Journal reports that "one local senior-housing and care provider looking to take advantage of the state’s aging demographics is Bloomfield-based Duncaster, which this year will be seeking approval to significantly expand its Loeffler Road campus with the addition of 90 independent living units, as well as major renovations to its existing facilities.' The HBJ story continues, noting that Duncaster’s main campus occupies 95 acres in Bloomfield, with more land nearby for the planned expansion, which will take place over multiple phases.  Phase one, which could break ground in late 2024, calls for 30 new apartments.
